They come from opposite backgrounds, and seem to have very different motives. But underneath that, its simple: They're both orphans who were traumatised really early in life, and they've had to adopt an alternate persona in order to cope. Im sure he is thinking “it really is a small world after all”. The 3rd and final laugh is the funniest of them all: to the rest of the world, Joker and Batman seem like these invincible superhuman warriors; but on the inside they're just scared, lonely, broken souls. Nobody will ever understand that except Joker and Batman. That's why he tells the interviewer “You wouldnt get it”. Its a common theme in the Batman universe that no matter how many times they cross swords, the Batman and the Joker could never kill each other, because they always share this unique bond, like they cannot live without each other. They may be arch enemies, but the sad truth is that Joker is the only person in the world who could ever understand and accept Batman for what he truly is. And vice versa. No scene sets that up more perfectly than this one. Hollywood, if youre reading this, I beg you to do a sequel to this joker movie. Theres so much more to be explored artistically. And I think wed all agree that a sequel would make humungous profits upon release.
